Sheryl
is a foul-mouthed single mum
of Danny who's out of control.
Pat, Hello! magazine enthusiast,
is the middle-class, middle-aged
wife of tyrannical Angus.
Quiet, long suffering Deb
looks after her elderly mum,
and hippy-dippy Lucy plays
the tambourine and spouts
deep poetry, man.
Anna, vicar's wife, has the
answer to all their problems.
All they have to do is attend
her seminars, follow her advice,
and they too can achieve perfection.
A self-proclaimed ëcandle
to the moths'.
Feeding off the flaws of her
flock Anna breaks them down
one-by-one, holds their hands
and leads them to their individual
downfalls. Anna, as it turns
out, has her own imperfections
to contend with, but chooses
to pretend they're not there.
Quite an assortment of characters
- all played by Rosalind Adler
(also writer of the piece)
who takes them on with awe-inspiring
versatility and quick transformation.
Epitomised in central character
Anna is the notion that leadership
relies not always on proficiency,
but sometimes on fierce and
unfaltering self-belief.
In an astonishing feat of
sheer endurance Adler pitches
her piece with a nice balance
of humour and tragedy, with
some exceptionally moving
moments. Her chameleon-like
transformations are delicious
to watch, conveying some characteristics
that are at times unnervingly
close to home.
The result is a show that
is funny, moving and beautifully
observed; with the subject
of self-delusion a poignant
one to finish on.
Definitely worth a visit.
