La Veillee des Abysses
Peacock Theatre
04 - 15 October 2005

If it wouldn't get you arrested, I would suggest that you find yourself, at any price, a small child to bring to James Thiérrée's exquisite piece of dance/circus theatre, La Veillée des Abysses, currently bewitching the Peacock Theatre. This is a Narnia of imaginative re-inventionings, exploring the possibilities of everyday items as dance partners and playthings (an instantly magical device). Set in the evocative wonderland of a sort of Victorian playroom for grown-up Lost Boys and Girls, this show contains some deliciously memorable set-pieces, but was for me at its strongest when the dancers were featured individually, simply being their joyously playful, flexible selves. In these anxious days this is wondrously comforting, enchanted theatre that hugs you with its effortlessly optimistic message  that there is beauty and laughter in craft and technique. This is a spell from which a child may never awake.
